In the last post I talked about going to Freshwater East; today we took a trip to Freshwater West which is an entirely different sort of beach but still has the same sandy issues as most of the rest of the Pembrokeshire coastline. Fresh West is a wonderful, windswept, stretch of sand. It is spectacular and favoured by surfers, fishermen and families in equal measure.
The trouble is, when I try to photograph this landscape it comes out flat and pretty unremarkable. What I try to do in situations like this is to get some foreground detail in the image. It gives the picture a focus as well as showing, by implication, that the rest of the beach is big.
I used my mirrorless camera for these images. Both were taken at 1/320s at f/8 with an ISO of 100 as it was quite a bright day. The first image was shot at 55mm and the second was a wider angle at 35mm. I tried to get quite low in both images so that the foreground wasn’t lost in the bigger, beach image.
